I have been talking (a lot..too much?) about my upcoming trip..about packing my life to fit into storage and 2 suitcases.

A good friend of mine ( an immigrant from eastern Europe) said she knows what it is like to put your life into 2 suitcases.

This got me thinking...

A large percentage of Canadian are immigrants ( > 40% in Toronto I believe)

So is packing up your life, concentrating on what is the important parts of living, packing up your life into 2 suitcases, is now part of the Canadian psych?

How is this going to shape Canada in the future.

The Great Depression in the 30sĀ  and WWII created a couple of generations ( my parents) of savers.

The boomers ( my generation) are consumers ( maybe over consumers)

What will the generation of this latest wave of immigrants bring...
consumers ( rebuilding their lives)
savers ( hanging on to what they have)
more focused ( they know what it is like to leave everything behind)

I think this is one of the most interesting aspect of my adventure..going from a culture where differences are expected, encouraged and celebrated, to a culture where difference is discouraged, and uniqueness is rare.

I admire your courage to make such a bold move. The thought of ONLY 2 suitcases for me is mind boggling. I bring a large one just to go camping.

On one side, I have just helped my mom settle in after moving from Manitoba to Barrie. I was shocked at how much useless stuff she had with her. For example she had an entire box of expired can goods. I'm certain at least one of the movers will have a legit workman's comp injury from the stuff my mom had in boxes.

My kids generation sure have a lot more "stuff" than we ever did when we were in university. Their peers who are international students are traveling much lighter. Mind you this is in the age of laptops and iPods. Am told that they purchased everything but electronics when they got here, including warmer clothes. I think the trend is "more focused."

Whenever I want to purge possessions, I watch a couple episodes of hoarders and go nuts with a couple of garbage bags.
